Hinsdale Central Sailing

HINSDALE CENTRAL SAILING CLUB

Background:

Hinsdale Central Sailing Club was started by a group of Hinsdale Central

students and parents in the fall of 2010.

The Club is a parent sponsored club which operates independently of the school.  The Hinsdale Central Club Team competes as a member of the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) which includes over 300 high schools across the country.  The Midwest Division of the ISSA (MISSA) includes over 32 schools primarily from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan.

Club Objectives:

The Club’s objectives are to organize, develop and support a competitive racing team for the benefit of Hinsdale Central High School (HC) students and to introduce and teach students the sport of sailing in both a recreational and competitive format. The Club is open to all HC students in good standing and the club enforces HC’s athletic eligibility requirements and ethics.

High School Sailing:

The sport of High School Sailing has steadily been gaining in popularity across the country.  It is an exciting coed sport that operates with both a fall and spring season. The fall season starts in September and runs into November and concludes on the second weekend of November.  The boats sailed in the fall season are the club 420 and the laser.  Both boats are single design boats; the 420 is a double handed boat and the laser is a single handed boat.  The spring season starts in late March/April and continues until late May. The club 420 is sailed in the spring season. In general High School sailing closely parallels the collegiate sailing format.

Hinsdale Central Club Operations:

Hinsdale Central Sailing Club practices out of the facilities of Chicago Yacht Club (CYC).  It is the norm for high schools clubs and or parent sponsored clubs to have their members’ contract with Yacht Club Sailing Schools directly for Club/Team operations.  There are many reasons for this format, including but not limited to availability of Expertise, Equipment and Insurance.  Thus, Individual HCS Club members contract with CYC for its coaches, equipment (sailboats, safety boats) and practice venue.  CYC has been a leader in teaching sailing and racing for 85 years.

Practices are held several days per week at Belmont Harbor.   The Club participates in shared practices with several other schools including New Trier, Latin and St. Ignatius.  This format allows competitive training and shared fellowship and team development.

The Fee paid to CYC covers all practices and equipment usage and coaching at all Regattas sponsored by ISSA.  Parents cooperate with each other in the transportation of the sailors to and from Belmont Harbor.

In general it takes 35-40 minutes to travel to Belmont Harbor. Once a critical mass is reached consideration of a bus will be considered.

Fees and Equipment:

Fees: The 2010 cost to sail with CYC in the fall season was $400 for all weekday and weekend practice and $200 for Saturday only practice.  A separate fee for each regatta is charged by the host club and paid by sailors who participate.  These fees cover meals (breakfast and lunches and an event gift).

Equipment: A life jacket, sunglasses, sailing boots and appropriate foul weather gear is required for fall sailing.  A dry suit is required for spring sailing.  A limited amount of rental equipment is available through CYC.

Sailing is an exciting sport which can be enjoyed for a lifetime.  Competitive Sailing is growing at both the High school and Collegiate Level.  All that is necessary is a positive attitude and a willingness to learn, please contact us to learn more.
